In January 2014 TeliaSonera joined an executive, high level EU working group brought together by Vice-President EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes to discuss the future use of the Ultra High Frequency spectrum in Europe. The aim was to come up with a long term plan for the efficient use of this vital resource in society.

Today the 700 MHz spectrum is mainly used for broadcast services but as demand for mobile broadband solutions is rapidly growing there is a need to use the spectrum to meet our customer’s need for high-speed mobile broadband.

Working group from operators, broadcasters and industry groups
The working group was made up of CEOs and Executives from 19 telecoms operators, broadcasters and industry groups, and has been chaired by Mr Pascal Lamy, the former Director-General for the World Trade Organization. TeliaSonera was represented by Tommy Ljunggren, Director of Group Technology Network Architecture.

The group did not manage to agree on a common position but on the 1st of September the Chairman of the group published his Report and recommendations to the Vice-President Neelie Kroes based on the work done by the group.

TeliaSonera’s view on the outcome
TeliaSonera welcomes the recommendation to allocate the 700 MHz band for mobile broadband in all EU member states by 2020. This will provide much better opportunities to provide high speed internet connections to the EU citizens in rural as well as dense areas in a cost effective manner.

Tommy Ljunggren“Sweden and Finland has already made the decision for allocation of the 700 MHz band to mobile broadband in 2017 and we hope that more countries will follow this clear direction for the EU member states”, says Tommy Ljunggren.

“As proposed by GSMA, the mobile operators industry group,  we support  a review of the EU position on the  frequency band below 700 MHz  no later than 2020, instead of 2025 as proposed by the chairman“, Tommy Ljunggren concludes.
