Telia Company’s Lithuanian subsidiaries deliver breakthrough Internet of Things project

Omnitel and Teo, Telia Company’s subsidiaries in Lithuania, will be providing smart electricity meter data transmission and management services to business customers of electricity and gas distribution company Energijos Skirstymo Operatorius (ESO).

The smart meter is a next generation electricity meter that can automatically and wirelessly send accurate meter readings to your energy supplier, saving customers the hassle of reading the meter manually or trusting the supplier to make an accurate estimate.

In accordance with the contract, Omnitel and Teo will, over the next 7 years, transfer up to 80,000 personalized SIM cards adapted to the Internet of Things to ESO and also perform management and maintenance of their data platform. The SIM card platform previously used by ESO only allowed simple meter reading data, whereas this new solution will allow ESO to monitor the quality of data transmission and to quickly detect faults and irregularities. The project will potentially save ESO EUR 26,500 annually.

Currently, almost 12,000 ESO business customers make use of the possibilities offered by smart meters and technology is currently being tested which may enable rollout to private customers in the near future.
