Tool from Telia and Save the Children helps families talk about online life

A survey by Telia in Denmark shows that only about half of Danish parents have talked to their children about online behavior. To support family dialogue, Telia and Save the Children Denmark provides the free-of-charge dialogue tool "Your Digital Directory".

Research indicates that the risk of bad experiences online can be lowered through dialogue in the family about “online life”. Your Digital Directory is an online tool for parents with children aged seven to eleven. Parents are provided with the necessary tools to start an open and constructive dialogue with their children about the pitfalls of social life on the web. This includes digital bullying, conflicts online, websites unsuitable for children, and digital child molesters.

Our contribution to children's digital security
When children begin to explore the web, they meet lots of new opportunities for socializing, learning, and playing games. This also sparks concerns among the parents. A survey among Danish parents with children between six and twelve years shows that 59 percent are worried that their children will have unpleasant experiences on the internet.

"Children's digital security is an important area, and there is a need for action so that parents can better guide their children to be more responsible when using the network and mobile phones. Therefore, we are very pleased to collaborate with Save the Children to develop relevant services for families who use our services," says Mette Honoré, Head of Communications at Telia in Denmark.

Telia Denmark has for several years worked actively and responsibly with children and young adults on how to use mobile phones and the internet. In October 2013, Telia Denmark launched the subscription 4JUNIOR, which aims to give parents greater peace of mind concerning their children’s mobile use.

"There are many great initiatives throughout our group, that support our ambition to meet the needs of families, parents and children. The services that Telia in Denmark has developed can clearly stipulate a role model in this specific area in our children online program and we plan to make Your Digital Directory available also for customers in other countries," says Anne Larilahti, VP Head of Sustainability Strategy. at Telia Company.

To improve the work and focus the attention on children online even more, Telia Denmark is now working together with Save the Children and the Danish telecommunication museum Enigma to establish a Think Tank with kids. The aim is to create attention around the issue and to discuss where, if and when there might be a need for actual guidelines or rules on the matter - also from a child's perspective.
