Full speed on Sweden’s new digital highway

Telia Company’s 1,250km digital highway Backbone North – the largest investment in digital infrastructure in Sweden this millennia – has been inaugurated.

Since the construction started in May 2014 Telia Company has invested MSEK 400 in Backbone North. The 1,250km long fiber cable stretches between Örebro in the south and Luleå in the north. The digital highway's capacity is up to 1 million times higher compared to a regular fiber to the home.

Stronger infrastructure
“Modern and future digital services demand high and reliable capacity. With Backbone North we are strengthening the digital infrastructure by connecting different parts of Sweden and creating possibilities for new businesses, jobs and a connected way of living. Backbone North also strenghtens northern Sweden’s ability to attract international datacenters to establish there,” says Hélène Barnekow, CEO of Telia Sweden, who inaugurated the fiber cable on Thursday, 23 February, accompanied by Sam Rihani, CEO of Facebook Sweden, and several others.
