Discovery’s channels disappear from Telia’s TV service

Telia will no longer be able to offer Discovery's channels to its TV customers as of June 8, when the agreement with the broadcaster expires. Telia will provide customers with new replacement channels.

The current agreement with European broadcaster SBS, which sells channel packages to Telia, expires June 7. Today, Telia is announcing that the parties have failed to reach a new agreement.

“We have done our outmost to solve this but unfortunately, we have not reached an agreement,” says Jonas Hasselberg, Head of Consumer Business at Telia in Sweden. “Discovery still wants to limit where and in which way our customers watch TV, at an unreasonable price increase, and that is something that we can’t accept. We are sincerely sorry that our customers are caught in the middle.”

Channels such as Discovery, Animal Planet, Eurosport 1 and 2, TLC and Kanal 5, Kanal 9 and Kanal 11 will disappear. Telia will provide customers with new replacement channels, including HBO Nordic.

"We are very proud to have Sweden's most satisfied TV customers year after year. It is an award we care highly about and therefore, a change for the worse is unacceptable. We know that many customers will miss the channels that are now disappearing, but we hope they will appreciate the new alternatives from some of the most popular content providers," says Jonas Hasselberg.

Affects TV viewers in the Nordic countries
Around 700,000 households in Sweden subscribe to Telia’s television packages, in Denmark 30,000 households vill be affected and in Finland about 60,000.
