Oracle and Telia establish a new company for mobile Internet services

Oracle Corporation and Telia are to form a new company that will offer mobile Internet services in the international marketplace. The company, to be based in Sweden, will focus on further developing the unique competence that Telia and Oracle has built through their previous joint-venture projects within the areas of wireless services and in the development of the product Oracle Portal-to-Go.
The company, not yet named, will deliver products and services in the global market that are based on Oracle's Portal-to-Go which is a platform independent web solution that allows Internet content to be offered on virtually any kind of terminal.
The demand for applications which use this technology is expected to be considerable in the international marketplace in the future as new WAP telephones, cellular phones and handhelds become the most common devices used to access internet.
"Sweden is a prime example of how a country can take a leading position within the field of IT by offering cutting-edge mobile Internet solutions to the international marketplace. Here, you will find a great many dynamic companies and highly competent people which is vital if you are trying to rapidly bring new products and services to market. Most people probably don't realise it, but Telia has a highly successful R&D program that offers the company the potential to position itself on the world map as the source of solutions that will make it a service provider of choice. I am naturally very enthusiastic about the co-operation that we are now entering with Telia in our new joint company," says Pier-Carlo Falotti, European Head of Oracle Corporation.
"Following the trends that have evolved in mobile telephony and the Internet, the next phase is converging both areas in a mobile Internet environment. It's this development that has formed the basis for the new joint Telia/Oracle company that will draw from the best expertise of both worlds. The fact that we are forming a business together gives us a combination of competencies, flexibility and the ability to rapidly deploy new solutions which is a prerequisite for success. We have already proved that our a global co-operation, which has led to the launch of the world's first WAP applications that were unveiled at the Telecom 99' exhibition in Geneva last autumn, is sound", says Kenneth Karlberg, Vice President, Telia, head of Business Area Mobile Communi-cations.
"We now need to consolidate our operations. Our intention is to deliver our first services during the spring. Initially, the company will have 25 employees. "
