Sonera provides its customers with 3G mobile communications services in co-operation with it's partners

Sonera opened its UMTS network for commercial use in 20 localities in Finland on October 12, 2004. Sonera provides its customers with a high-quality, easy-to-use channel to the world of 3G: the best services and a seamlessly functioning network independent of the technology and terminal device.

Sonera provides its customers with extensive third-generation mobile communications services in co-operation with its partners. "The operators do not create the markets by themselves: we work together with mobile phone and network manufacturers and service providers to improve usability and services. This is deep co-operation yielding easy-to-use service entities that meet the customers' needs," says Anni Vepsäläinen, President of TeliaSonera Finland.

The data transmission speed of Sonera's UMTS network, at best 384 kbit/s, makes the services easier to use. The speed makes it more flexible to open e-mail attachments, surf on the Internet and send video. Transmitting video content, listening to music and playing games also become increasingly more flexible.

The service menu of Sonera Plaza, for example, comprises dozens of colour services for consumers, divided according to topic, and a number of services targeted at business users.

For business customers, Sonera offers a service entity that is built on high-speed data transmission needed at mobile work and on the ease-of-use of services. From the point of view of the end user, this means an easy-to-use user interface and a range of terminal devices, and from the business perspective, a manageable and information-secure solution.

Nokia mobile phone for Sonera customers

Sonera and Nokia launch in the Finnish market a mobile phone furnished with Sonera services. Nokia 6630, is the first Symbian smart phone supporting three network technologies. The phone is provided with Sonera's connection settings, for example, a menu key that takes the user directly to the services and ready links to useful services.

"We estimate that more than every second terminal device to be sold in 2005 comprises either EDGE or UMTS or both. We hope our customers find our services increasingly easier to use with the Nokia 6630, and we hope this helps people to adopt 3G mobile communications as part of their everyday lives," says Anni Vepsäläinen.

To use the high-speed data transmission of the UMTS network, the Sonera customer needs a UMTS phone and a Sonera 3G card (E9.90), which can be bought from a Sonera dealer. Voice and text messages cost the same in the UMTS network as in the GSM network. Data transmission is also priced in accordance with the current pricing models with regard to both consumer and business customer services.
