Skanova broadband for the Municipality of Malung
Malung has become the second municipality in the Dalarna region, in west central Sweden, to sign an agreement with TeliaSonera for the build-out of a municipality-wide broadband network. The network will have a penetration of approximately 98 percent of the municipality and give households transmission speeds up to 8 Mbit/s. The build-out is expected to be finished by February 2005 at the latest. TeliaSonera signed a similar agreement with the Municipality of Vansbro, also in Dalarna, last year.
All telecom switching centres in the Municipality of Malung will be upgraded for ADSL, which utilises copper cable in the existing telephone network and allows a very high broadband penetration rate, even in rural areas. In most areas of the municipality, a network will be built to link towns and communities by using fibre optic cable or radio links with a very high transmission capacity to connect the switching centres.
"Broadband is an essential factor for growth and we will now have good broadband penetration in virtually all areas of our municipality, which is very positive. The general public and businesses in our municipality have requested the build-out of broadband service and we are very pleased that we have now finalised the agreement with TeliaSonera," says Kurt Podgorski, chairman of the municipal executive board of the Municipality of Malung.
Users are free to choose one of the 12 operators that will provide broadband services to consumers and companies through the network. Depending on their choice of broadband provider, all households and companies located within a link distance of 3.5 km from an upgraded telecom switching centre can have broadband with speeds up to 8 Mbit/s. Those located with nine kilometres from a centre can get up to 500 kbit/s. The build-out is also prepared for future connections offering much higher speeds.
"With ADSL technology we can combine the existing telephone network with new infrastructure. This allows us to offer a cost-effective and fast build-out of the broadband network with a very high penetration rate, even in municipalities where there are long distances between central towns and communities in rural areas," says Susanne Jacobsson, head of TeliaSonera Network Sales.
During the past year TeliaSonera has signed agreements to provide broadband networks to a large number of municipalities and counties in Sweden.
