Sonera's information security service expands to spam and content filtering

The information security service package provided by Sonera to consumers is supplemented with a new service, while the prices of the old services drop. The new service Sonera offers includes not only virus protection and firewall but also spam and content filtering. The Sonera Tietoturva information security service is implemented in cooperation with F-Secure.

The volume of viruses, worms and spam is constantly increasing on the Internet and in email. Over a half of all email traffic is estimated to be spam. Up-to-date information security services considerably reduce the spreading of viruses and their harmful effects on a personal computer. Sonera's information security service provides means to minimize these harmful effects.

The prices of the renewed Sonera Tietoturva service have dropped, while new features have been added to it. In addition to anti-virus software and firewall, the service package now also includes spam and content filtering. The customer can also select merely virus protection, which detects and removes viruses, or a combination of virus protection and firewall, which also prevents outsiders from intruding into the user's computer. The renewed firewall also includes control of dial-up connections. The firewall monitors what numbers a modem using the customer's telephone line is dialling and, if the number is not in the list of approved numbers (e.g. Sonera's dial-up service numbers), requests the user's separate permission before the call is connected.

The spam filter included in the Sonera Tietoturva service is software that filters out for instance advertising messages from incoming email on the customer's own computer. The software examines the structure, textual content and wordings of a message to determine whether it is spam. The software saves the spam messages it has filtered out. It is thus possible for the customer to check what messages the software has removed.

By means of the content filtering included in the service, the customer can restrict access to predetermined Internet pages. This allows parents, for example, to prevent their child from unintentionally accessing pages containing adult entertainment, games or violence. The content filtering can be deactivated by the use of a password the customers can define themselves.

To corporate customers, Sonera offers the Spam Filtering service, in which the efficient prevention of spam is based on technical analysis of the structure, textual content and formulation of the message.

Sonera also fights spam with network-level measures to ensure trouble-free operation of its data communications network and email system. In July, the company started to filter out spam from the email system of its consumer customers. In addition, Sonera fights the spam load by means of the so-called black lists of the SMTP email routing service of its corporate customers.
