152 jobs cut at TeliaSonera Broadband Services – 46 employees have already been redeployed within the company
The negotiations under the Act on Cooperation within Undertakings launched in the Broadband Services business area in Finland on April 23 were completed on June 5, 2007. As a result of the negotiations, 152 jobs will end in network operations, product management, sales and marketing, and operations development. The decline in the volume of fixed voice traffic, the clarification of roles, and the streamlining of operating models have reduced the need for labour in these functions. So far 46 employees have already found new positions within the company as a result of either reorganizations or seeking a new job.
”Although jobs will end, it should be kept in mind that, thanks to the Competence Pool, nobody will be dismissed”, says Senior Vice President Juha-Pekka Weckström of Broadband Services in Finland. ”The company’s internal job market operates well. The change is least visible to our customers, as the jobs in customer service, deliveries and invoicing were not affected by the negotiations.”
Greatest changes in network operations
The total number of jobs to be ended, 152, consists of 120 jobs to be actually ended and 32 jobs to be transferred elsewhere in the TeliaSonera organization. In addition, 14 employees have already been redeployed in new positions. About two thirds of the 120 jobs to be ended are in network operations, while the rest of them are in product management, sales and marketing, and operations development.
”We have made some changes in the organization, as a result of which some jobs have been transferred from the units affected by the negotiations elsewhere within the company”, Juha-Pekka Weckström continues. ”Jobs have been transferred from network operations to the pan-Nordic unit responsible for contents and digital home, and from product management operations to the product development unit. The changes have helped to clarify the responsibilities and to tighten the cross-border cooperation within TeliaSonera.”
From the Competence Pool to a new career – one third continues at TeliaSonera
The competence pool model applied at TeliaSonera in Finland allows the company to flexibly adapt to changes in manpower need. According to the model used in TeliaSonera in Finland, employees are not dismissed even if their jobs end. In these kinds of situations, employees transfer with their previous pay to the Competence Pool, where they can seek new jobs within or outside the company or train themselves for new duties.
The model has proved extremely useful. Since 2006, a total of 570 employees have transferred to the Competence Pool. One third of them (186) have been redeployed within the company, while about half (294) have left the company. The average time employees spend at the Competence Pool is about three months.
”TeliaSonera has recently had 40 to 80 job openings every week in Finland alone, which means that those who are at the Competence Pool have good opportunities to find a job”, says Juha Pentti, Vice President of Human Resources. ”During 2007, almost a hundred permanent employees have already been recruited from outside the company. At the same time, hundreds of vacancies have been filled internally. It is estimated that there will still be hundreds of job openings this year, while other jobs will simultaneously be ended through the employer/employee cooperation procedure.”
