Sonera introduces top-speed fibre optic network in YH-Yhtymä Länsi Oy’s apartments
TeliaSonera Finland Oyj and YH-Yhtymä Länsi Oy have agreed that the residential buildings owned by YH-Yhtymä Länsi Oy, its subsidiaries, and Pirkanmaan YH-Asunnot Oy will be provided with broadband connections enabling transmission rates of up to 100 Mbps. The agreement covers more than 6,000 apartments the majority of which will have the fibre optic connections up and running by September 2008.
All the apartments owned by YH-Yhtymä Länsi Oy and its subsidiaries will be equipped with basic 1 Mbps broadband access, to be included in the rent, and the residents will also be able to subscribe to higher speeds and supplementary services for a separate charge. Depending on the in-house network, the maximum transmission rate may reach up to 100 Mbps.
The agreement covers almost 200 buildings with over 6,000 apartments. The majority of the buildings are located in Tampere and the surrounding municipalities Pirkkala, Lempäälä, Ylöjärvi, Nokia, and Kangasala, while others are in such places as Turku, Raisio, Naantali, Pori, and Vaasa. All the properties will be connected to Sonera’s broadband network by the end of September 2008.
“The present solution makes sure that high-speed broadband connections will be easily available to our residents for an affordable price. We take care of our customers' needs, while preparing for the challenges of tomorrow. Our solution improves the standards of equipment in our apartments. Offers were invited in autumn 2007, and our choice after competitive tendering was Sonera: not only is the price competitive, but Sonera is also a nationwide player able to guarantee sufficient coverage. Of course, our choice was affected by the suitability of the product as a long-term solution both for our companies and residents”, concludes CEO Mikko Laurila from YH-Yhtymä Länsi Oy.
“There is a growing demand for fibre optic based broadband solutions in apartment buildings. The present deal demonstrates convincingly that our intensified efforts to build fibre optic networks in the largest Finnish towns are a move in the right direction. Broadband connections included in the rent have become more common, and a similar trend can be observed in housing companies. The need for high access rates grows rapidly as an increasing number of more versatile broadband and TV services are introduced in broadband networks,” explains Sales Director Esko Korkalo from TeliaSonera Broadband Services.
