Sonera’s K2 programme awarded in Global HRD Awards

Sonera’s K2 programme was rated among the top three in the Performance Management category of Global HRD Awards. The competition is organized annually by IFTDO (International Federation of Training and Development Organisations), the umbrella organization of communities specialized in personnel development.

Even internationally speaking, K2 is a unique investment in personnel. The whole personnel of Mobility Services Finland – nearly 1,100 people in all – have been taking part in the programme for the past three years. The personnel’s job satisfaction has risen by 10 %. Heli Partanen, HR Business Partner, says that K2 has also attracted tremendous attention outside the company.

The change management model introduced a new kind of open corporate culture

“K2 was lauched in 2006 as a change management model. The mobile communications business was undergoing rapid changes, and at times profitability was at stake. Simultaneously the number of employees was decreasing. We were busy deliberating how we could combine efficiency, new business growth and job satisfaction,” says Partanen.

An important thing in the K2 programme is the management’s strong commitment. In practice, this has meant that the higher you are in the organization, the more time you spend on the programme. We are currently running course no. 12, and the objective is that every employee would take every course.

“From the beginning the most important thing has been creating an open corporate culture. Both the personnel and the management know how things are and information flows fluently in both directions. The dialogue thus genuinely steers the operations and decision-making”, Partanen says.
