SMS messaging and a website resolve transportation issues in a small village
Tolg is a typical rural village in southern Sweden, and lacks adequate public transit. Maja Söderberg came up with an idea that solved the transportation problem common in basically all rural areas.
Busses are only available once or twice a day, and everyone generally has one or two cars to solve the puzzle of picking up kids for activities, shopping or just getting to and from work.
By using a website, cell phones and SMS messaging, she created a solution for her village.
Over the course of the first year, the participants have traveled a distance equal to traveling around the globe. Not only did the commuting service save travel time and car usage, it also turned out to be a catalyst for the inhabitants to start meeting up more frequently than before and for new ideas to be generated.
