The national instrument of Kazakhstan goes viral
Almas Altay is a dombra musician who lives in Astana. He wanted to celebrate the Kazakh medals in the London Olympics in 2012 by gathering a few people and throwing a dombra party. Dombra is the national instrument of Kazakhstan and is often used at social gatherings.
Every day of the Olympic Games musicians gathered at a central spot in Astana and played dombra.
Via Facebook, the idea quickly spread across Kazakhstan and beyond, and gathered many participants.
As the response was so good, they kept on arranging dombra parties every Thursday evening during the summer. 2013 the event became so popular it was voted the most popular event in a TV show, and the Facebook page today has more than 23,000 followers.
