Telia Company to show football game in live virtual reality

Telia and Nokia collaborate so football fans can experience one of the first 360 3D live virtual reality matches in Europe at Telia 5G Arena in Helsinki.

The Finnish football league match today, June 15, between Helsinki and Jyväskylä will be streamed live with three Nokia OZO virtual reality cameras and streamed over Telia’s mobile network to be viewed with virtual reality glasses at the VR corner at Telia 5G Arena in Helsinki.

“This is one of the first virtual reality live streaming productions in Europe. It gives direction to the ways we can enrich sports entertainment with new technology. At Telia 5G Arena, we want to present new, exciting and cool experiences to both in-stadium audiences and to spectators participating with mobile devices,” says Jari Collin, CTO at Telia Finland.

The production gives a first taste of the possibilities of future technologies at sporting events. Cloud servers and a Nokia Multi-access Edge Computing platform installed at the Arena guarantee low latency, reliability, scalability and efficiency to enable the use of new type of applications.

”The low latency enabled by MEC technology precedes upcoming 5G networks that will open new possibilities for tailored, real-time services. The OZO Live broadcast deployed together with Telia is an excellent proof of how user experience in mass events can be improved with existing network technologies even before 5G transition,” says Tommi Uitto, head of Global Product Sales, Mobile Networks, Nokia.
