Supporting children to acquire skills for a safe behavior online
As part of its Safer Internet Day 2018 contribution, Telia Company today launches a school workshop concept that familiarizes children with digital privacy through participation and interaction.
More than half of the children have had negative experiences online according to research conducted by Telia Company together with its partners Save the Children Finland, World Childhood Foundation and Kantar TNS Finland. Improving children’s digital skills and awareness is crucial for their online safety.
Telia Company’s workshop concept is aimed at children aged 11-13 and uses the principle of participatory pedagogy. Developed by the company’s Children’s Advisory Panel, it uses input from more than 1,500 children in seven countries that have either participated in co-creative workshops about their online life or replied to an online survey.
“Promoting a safe use of internet among children and young people, who are active users of our services, is part of the company’s responsible business approach. Children are already quite informed and resilient online users. With this workshop, we aim to empower them and improve their skills even further," says Anne Larilahti, Head of Sustainability, Telia Company.
Equipping schools and parents
The workshop concept material is designed to help schools and parents to facilitate discussions around the safer use of internet. All material is free and available in English, Danish, Estonian, Finnish, Lithuanian, Norwegian and Swedish on Telia’s websites.
The training can be facilitated by Telia Company volunteers, making use of another initiative of the company - YOUNITE - that encourages the company’s employees to engage in activities connected to digitalization and to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Safer Internet Day, celebrated in over 130 countries, is an annual event encouraging safe and responsible online behavior and promoting a better internet, in particular for youngest users.
The Children’s Advisory Panel, an initiative by Telia Company in collaboration with child rights organizations and schools in the Nordic and Baltic, was created to better under¬stand children’s own perspectives of online and digital aspects of life by listening to them through qualitative co-creative methods.
