Nokia and Skanova to cooperate and develop Wireless Internet concept
Telia's new network company, Skanova, has entered into a cooperation agreement with Nokia to develop a wireless Internet concept utilizing Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology. The aim of this collaboration is to develop a complete technical solution that will function throughout Skanova's national broadband network in Sweden. The solution is expected to be sold to service providers in Sweden that want to develop a product offering for their residential customers.
In a wireless Internet solution, household residents will no longer have to have cables connected to their computers. Instead, the home will become more mobile, since users will be able to move about freely with the technology inside and outside their homes. A wireless Internet lets users surf on the Internet where and whenever it suits them best, whether from the living room sofa, the garden hammock or the bathroom. Nokia and Skanova will now start to cooperate closely to test and develop a finished product that will function in Skanova's broadband network in Sweden. "We're very pleased that Nokia will start to collaborate with Skanova. The combination of broadband and a wireless Internet is an important step towards Nokia's vision of the mobile information society," says Seppo Rantakokko, President of Nokia Networks in Sweden. "Skanova's visions as a network wholesaler will enable very interesting technological solutions in the future." The wireless Internet concept will have a capacity of up to 11 Mbit/s. All transmitted data will be encrypted to prevent neighbors and other unauthorized persons from intercepting and reading data traffic. "The technology is there. What's missing is a finished, marketable product," says Ingmar Jonsson, Division Manager at Skanova. "Consumers must wait until the technology has been developed into a product by Skanova and a service provider. Nokia and Skanova will therefore conduct a joint development program involving pilot tests in households in Gävle, Sweden." - - - - - - About Skanova: Skanova is an independent wholesale network provider within the Telia group of companies.
