Sonera launches MMS Gateway for inter-operator multimedia messaging

Sonera has today announced the newest addition to its existing GRX service. MMS Gateway enables secure, seamless and reliable interconnection of multimedia messages between mobile operators over the existing GRX infrastructure. Based on open standards, the service is already in pilot use with several operators.
The MMS Gateway concept is a breakthrough in reducing the complexity of building the interworking environment of multimedia messaging. For the operator the service offers an effortless way of implementing all MMS Interworking to any 2G or 3G mobile operator in the world. Operators can now take advantage of the already working concept of GRX and utilize it for the benefit of MMS as well. According to Senior Development Manager Panu Mattila, the pilot phase has been a great success. "During these past three months the pilot has proven the concept to be extremely reliable and secure. The operators are passing real user MMS traffic through the service for real revenues. The ability to send MMS messages to other operators and countries is a key driver for the whole MMS business," says Mr Mattila. The MMS Gateway service will be available commercially in the second quarter of 2003 to all Sonera GRX customers. Sonera GRX service is available globally and currently counts 23 operator customers, with several new agreements pending.
