The mobile operator GSM Kazakhstan with the brand name Kcell, in which
TeliaSonera´s subsidiary Fintur Holdings holds a majority share, has
introduced the first mobile internet and multimedia messaging services
in the Eurasian markets of Fintur. With these advanced services Kcell
sets a new high-quality level of mobile communication in Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan is Fintur´s largest market, counting 47 percent of Fintur´s
revenues during 2002. Kazakhstan represents the strong growth potential
of TeliaSonera's Eurasian markets with a mobile penetration of about 8
percent compared to the total population of 14.9 million.
Kcell is the leading mobile operator in Kazakhstan with a market share
of 70 percent. Kcell's subscriber growth during the first half of this
year was 18 percent, and at the end of June the company had 723,000
subscribers. TeliaSonera consolidates GSM Kazakhstan as a subsidiary
with a 51 percent ownership via TeliaSonera´s Fintur operations.
Kcell's Mobile Internet is a GPRS-based service that allows an on-line
connection to the Internet via a mobile phone. The service is available
at any time, in any place covered by Kcell's network. The implementation
of GPRS is a significant step in the modernization of the company's GSM
network towards 3G. The use of GPRS technology also makes it
considerably easier to access WAP services. On Kcell's WAP site one can
find various informative sections, polyphonic melodies and pictures.
Another new service - MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) allows sending
photographs and video clips accompanied by music via a mobile phone.
