Skanova broadband network rolled out in Örnsköldsvik, Sollefteå and Härnösand

The majority of the residents in the Swedish municipalities of Örnsköldsvik, Sollefteå and Härnösand now have access to the region's new broadband network. They can already use broadband services with speeds up to 2 Mbit/s from different operators.
The build-out of the broadband network was started in July 2003 and the network's construction was a joint project between Skanova and the three municipalities. Close to 85 percent of the residents in the region now have access to the network and private consumers and enterprises can choose among 12 ADSL operators that use Skanova's network.
"Together with roads, electric power and telephony, access to fast and reliable data communications is now a condition for the business community and public services to function. The broadband network also makes communities more attractive to residents, especially those living in rural areas," says Glenn Nordlund, commissioner for Örnsköldsvik.
Elisabeth Lassen, commissioner for Sollefteå, agrees:
"The build-out of broadband is a necessary and important prerequisite for allowing continuous, positive growth and the business community to develop well in the region," she says.
The network covers 20 communities in Härnösand, 16 in Sollefteå and 19 in Örnsköldsvik. In each location, telecom exchanges have been upgraded to ADSL capacity, which utilizes the existing telephone network, enabling a very high network penetration rate, even in sparsely populated areas. These communities have also been connected by a new fibre optic network with a very high transmission speed.
"It's very gratifying that the network serves so many communities because it offers many advantages for companies and private consumers. It will be much simpler to run a business outside central communities. It is also very good, for example, that rural schools can benefit the technology," says Sig-Britt Ahl, commissioner for Härnösand.
All households and companies located within a distance of 3.5 km from an upgraded exchange can get broadband with speeds up to 2 Mbit/s. Those located within 5.5 km of an exchange can have broadband with speeds up to 0.5 Mbit/s. Users are always online and can surf and talk on the phone at the same time.
During the past year Skanova networks have been delivered to a large number of municipalities and counties in Sweden that have long distances between large central towns and sparsely populated rural communities. These include Överkalix and Kalix in Norrbotten in the north of Sweden; Stenungsund, Tjörn and Orust in Bohus County on the west coast; Norrköping, Valdemarsvik and Söderköping in the south central County of Östergötland, and Örebro and Kalmar counties in the southeast.
