Skanova broadband for 99 out of 100 in Municipality of Haninge

The first procurement contract for a broadband network has now been signed in Stockholm County in Sweden. This summer virtually all households in the Municipality of Haninge will gain access to broadband. The municipality has signed a contract with TeliaSonera for the build-out of a network with a penetration of approximately 99 percent in the municipality and with speeds up to 8 Mbit/s. The greater part of the network will be finished by July 2004.
All ten telecom switching centers in Haninge will be upgraded for ADSL, which utilizes the existing telephone network and allows very high broadband penetration. The switches will also be connected to a fibre-optic network or radio links with very high transmission speeds.
The build-out will start during the spring and most of the network will be installed already by July. The network covers communities/switching centers in Muskö, Norra Muskö/Herrstugan, Ornö, Norra Ornö, Gålö, Österhaninge kyrkbygd, Årsta Havsbad, Östnora and Hemfosa. Switches in central Muskö and Smådalarö will be placed in service in September 2004.
"We're very pleased that the network is now ordered. It is especially gratifying that the technology is being constantly developed, and that people living further away from switching centers can now get broadband connections," says Pelle Svensson, chairman of Haninge's municipal executive board.
Users can freely choose among 12 broadband providers that will deliver services to both households and companies. Depending on their choice of provider, all customers located within a distance of 3.5 km from an upgraded switching centre will have broadband with speeds up to 8 Mbit/s. Households located within a 9 km link distance from an upgraded switch will have speeds up to 0.5 Mbit/s.
"We're very pleased about the agreement with the Municipality of Haninge, not least because it is our first broadband contract in the Stockholm area. ADSL technology allows fast and cost-effective broadband coverage even in areas that have long distances between large central towns and sparsely populated rural communities. That's why ADSL broadband is ideal for a municipality like Haninge, which has densely populated areas as well as people living in different parts of the archipelago," says Susanne Jacobsson, head of TeliaSonera Network Sales.
During the past year Skanova networks have been delivered to a large number of municipalities and counties in Sweden. These include Örebro and Kalmar counties in the southeast, Norrköping, Söderköping and Valdemarsvik in Östergötland (south central Sweden), Örnsköldsvik, Sollefteå and Härnösand in Ångermanland in the northeast, and Stenungsund, Tjörn and Orust in Bohus County on the west coast.
