Skanova broadband for 98 percent of Sigtuna

Sigtuna has become the second municipality in Stockholm County to purchase a municipality-wide broadband network from TeliaSonera. Today (April 2), the Municipality of Sigtuna signed a contract with TeliaSonera for the build-out of a network that will provide broadband connectivity to approximately 98 percent of the municipality's residents. The network, which will give households access to broadband speeds up to 8 Mbit/s, is expected to be completely built by October 2004.
The Municipality of Sigtuna had had a fibre-optic core network linking the densely populated communities of Märsta, Sigtuna and Rosersberg, as well as a branch network in each populated centre. This network is now being expanded by upgrading telecom switching centres for ADSL, which utilises the existing telephone network and allows a very high broadband penetration, even in rural areas. After the build-out, all telecom switching centres will have capacity for speeds from 250 kbit/s up to 8 Mbit/s.
Users are free to choose one of the 12 ADSL operators that provide broadband services to consumers and companies through the network. Depending on their choice of broadband provider, all households and companies located within a link distance of 3.5 km from an upgraded telecom switching centre can have broadband with speeds up to 8 Mbit/s. Those located with nine kilometres from a centre can get at least 250 kbit/s.
"We are making a fair investment that will also allow people living in rural areas to use high-speed Internet and e-mail connections. A digital infrastructure for IT also opens up opportunities for establishing companies and building housing. This is important for increasing knowledge and strengthening the financial position of our municipality," says Anders Johansson, commissioner for the Municipality of Sigtuna.
"ADSL has major advantages because we can offer municipalities and counties a fast and cost-effective build-out with a very high penetration," says Susanne Jacobsson, head of TeliaSonera Network Sales.
During the past year Skanova networks have been delivered to a large number of municipalities and counties in Sweden, such as the Municipality of Haninge outside Stockholm; Kalmar and Örebro counties in the southeast, Norrköping, Söderköping and Valdemarsvik in Östergötland in south central Sweden; Örnsköldsvik, Sollefteå and Härnösand in Ångermanland County in the northeast, and Stenungsund, Tjörn and Orust in Bohus County on the west coast.
