Ekerö has become the third municipality in Stockholm County to purchase a municipality-wide broadband network from TeliaSonera. On June 21, the municipality signed an agreement with TeliaSonera Network Sales for the build-out of a network that will basically provide broadband to all residents in the municipality. The network will give households speeds up to 8 Mbit/s and is expected to be finished in March 2005.
All telecom switching centres in the Municipality of Ekerö will be upgraded for ADSL, which utilises copper cable in the existing telephone network and allows a very high broadband penetration, even in rural areas. In various areas of the municipality, a network will be built to link towns and communities by using fibre optic cable with a very high transmission capacity to connect the switching centres.
"We're pleased to start our cooperation with TeliaSonera. The entire municipality will have now gain access to broadband service, which will make Ekerö more attractive for people to live here and for companies to establish business here. The new network also shows that our municipality is on the cutting edge of development," says Peter Carpelan, chairman of the municipal executive board of the Municipality of Ekerö.
Users are free to choose one of the 12 operators that will provide broadband services to consumers and companies through the network. Depending on their choice of broadband provider, all households and companies located within a link distance of 3.5 km from an upgraded telecom switching centre can have broadband with speeds up to 8 Mbit/s. Those located with nine kilometres from a centre can get up to 500 kbit/s. The build-out is also prepared for future connections offering much higher speeds.
"Our broadband offering enables a fast and cost-effective build-out with a very high penetration rate, even in sparsely populated areas. This is perfect for a municipality like Ekerö, which consists of both densely populated centres and rural areas," says Susanne Jacobsson, head of TeliaSonera Network Sales.
During the past year TeliaSonera Network Sales has signed agreements to provide broadband networks to a large number of municipalities and counties in Sweden. In Stockholm County, Haninge and the Municipality of Sigtuna have previously signed agreements for the build-out of municipal broadband networks.
