Skanova broadband for Municipality of Tierp

This winter basically all residents in the Municipality of Tierp (east central Sweden) will have access to broadband. The municipality has signed an agreement with TeliaSonera Network Sales for the build-out of a municipality-wide broadband network, which in combination with the municipality's own network, will have a penetration of approximately 100 percent of the municipality. The network will give households speeds up to 8 Mbit/s and is expected to be finished by mid-February 2005.
Telecom switching centres in the Municipality of Tierp will be upgraded for ADSL, which utilises copper cable in the existing telephone network and allows a very high broadband penetration, even in rural areas. In most areas of the municipality, a network will be built to link towns and communities by using fibre optic cable or radio links with a very high transmission capacity to connect the switching centres.
"When we launched this broadband initiative, the municipality's vision was to have 100 percent penetration during 2005. The agreement enables us to fulfil this vision, which is very gratifying," says Bengt-Olov Eriksson, chairman of the municipal executive board of the Municipality of Tierp
Most users in the municipality are free to choose one of the 12 operators that will provide broadband services to consumers and companies through the network. Depending on their choice of broadband provider, all households and companies located within a link distance of 3.5 km from an upgraded telecom switching centre can have broadband with speeds up to 8 Mbit/s. Those located with nine kilometres from a centre can get up to 500 kbit/s. The build-out is also prepared for future connections offering much higher speeds.
"Our broadband offering enables a fast and cost-effective build-out with a very high penetration rate, even in sparsely populated areas. In the agreement with Tierp, we can offer virtually 100 percent broadband penetration, which we feel is solid proof of our expertise in the area," says Susanne Jacobsson, head of TeliaSonera Network Sales.
During the past year TeliaSonera has signed agreements to provide broadband networks to a large number of municipalities and counties in Sweden.
