Broadband build-out finished in Tierp

Most of the telecom switching centres in the Municipality of Tierp have been upgraded for ADSL, which utilises copper cable in the existing telephone network and allows a very high broadband penetration rate, even in rural areas. Many of the towns and communities in the municipality have also been interconnected in a network using fibre optics or radio links with very high transmission speeds. The entire network covers almost 100 percent of the municipality’s residents.
“It really means a lot to us to finally get a municipality-wide network. We were one of the forerunners in the region but had to wait for broadband service because densely populated areas were given priority. The development of the network in our area is very significant for both consumers and companies and it has increased the competitiveness of the entire municipality considerably,” says Bengt-Olov Eriksson, chairman of the executive board for the Municipality of Tierp.
Residents in the municipality are free to choose one of the Internet operators that will offer broadband services to consumers and companies through the network. Depending on their choice of operator and the type of node, households can choose services with speeds from 250 Kbit/s up to 24 Mbit/s. The network is also prepared for future connections offering much higher speeds.
“By combining the existing telephone network with a newly installed fibre optic network, we could offer the Municipality of Tierp a fast and cost-effective broadband build-out. With the technology, we could connect virtually the entire municipality, which pleases us very much since we know how important the development of broadband service is to Tierp,” says Monica Björk, acting head of TeliaSonera Network Sales.
During the past two years TeliaSonera Network Sales has signed agreements to provide broadband networks to approximately 80 municipalities in Sweden.
