Pohjoisen Keski-Suomen Verkkopalvelut Oy and TeliaSonera Finland Oyj have concluded an agreement on building broadband connections in the villages of the eight municipalities in Northern Central Finland. According to the agreement, the partners will build broadband connections to a total of 53 villages, allowing the homes, companies and other communities in the villages to acquire broadband Internet access. With public financial support from the European Union and the municipalities in the area, TeliaSonera will provide fast connection capacity in accordance with its Village Broadband concept. The broadband connections will be completed by the end of this year.
The municipalities participating in the project are: Kannonkoski, Karstula, Kivijärvi, Kinnula, Kyyjärvi, Pihtipudas, Saarijärvi and Viitasaari. The villages of Kinnula and Pylkönmäki already have broadband access.
”TeliaSonera’s Village Broadband concept is one way to implement the Finnish government’s national broadband strategy. This project in Northern Central Finland raises the number of Finnish municipalities participating in extending broadband access from urban areas to villages under the Sonera Village Broadband concept to clearly more than a hundred. ”The Village Broadband co-operation concept, in which the public sector provides part of the funding and TeliaSonera builds the connections, has already proven to be powerful”, says Asko Malinen director in TeliaSonera Finland Oyj.
“We think that fast, fixed-priced 24-hour connections will give a boost to the municipalities. The homes, companies and other communities such as schools will have it easier to reach the level of urban areas in terms of broadband access. By extending our high-quality-broadband connections to the villages, the partners will improve equality between municipal residents”, says Asko Malinen.
Broadband connections enable the use of the services of the information society
”The wishes of the people and businesses in the area were crucial when we made the decision to provide the villages with broadband access. This significantly improves the services provided to the residents, companies and communities in the villages. With broadband access, the people of the villages may for example engage in network-based business operations,” says Eeva Kuusela, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Pohjoisen Keski-Suomen Verkkopalvelut Oy.
”This proves that Northern Central Finland has entered a new stage of development in which the services of the information society are utilised more than ever. Fast connections are required also for remote work. Furthermore, small companies and farmers will be able to improve their operations and operating environments. Fast Internet access will also make it safer for senior citizens to live at home”, Eeva Kuusela points out.
