Sonera starts as a service provider in Digita’s @450 network in Finland

TeliaSonera Finland Oyj and Digita Oy have signed an agreement on the provision of broadband services in Digita’s @450 broadband network. The agreement starts with a three-month pilot period. With the agreement now concluded, Sonera supplements its already extensive service offering and improves the service availability by expanding its broadband services to outside the current coverage area of its broadband and 3G networks, to the whole coverage area of Digita’s network.

'The agreement with Digita is important to us: it supports our information society strategy, which aims to make broadband and VoIP calls available to all people in Finland, no matter where they live,’ says Juha-Pekka Weckström, Senior Vice President of TeliaSonera Broadband Services Finland.
Sonera will start a three-month test period of service provision at the beginning of June. The agreement now concluded aims at seamless cooperation between the network operator and the service provider to provide customers with the services they need.
’Our special focus in the cooperation is to provide services to municipalities with a lot of holiday cottages, to the archipelago and to such scarcely-populated areas where Digita’s network supplements Sonera’s broadband offering. According to our recent trend survey, more than half of the people in Finland want to use wireless Internet at their summerhouses or at hotels, which goes to show that apart from regular residents, people at leisure also have an obvious need for broadband services. Extensive broadband services make it possible to do productive work also outside the office,’ says Juha-Pekka Weckström.
’For Digita, the agreement with Sonera is a major step towards meeting the high demand for wireless @450 broadband. Our goal is that Finland will be the first country in the world with a wireless broadband network across the whole country. When the network is in place, the people in Finland – both consumers and companies – have a genuinely mobile wireless broadband network at their disposal,’ says Vice President Juha Malmberg from Digita Oy.

Digita’s wireless @450 broadband network, opened at the beginning of April, now covers an area in the Helsinki-Turku-Tampere axis in South Finland and an area from Oulu to Vuotso.
