Sonera leads the way in the expansion of high-speed broadband access
Consumers need increasingly high-speed broadband access to use broadband TV and content services. According to a market review by the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority, Sonera has increased its market share in broadband by two percentage points to 29 per cent in April - June. The sales of over 50,000 consumer subscriptions in the second quarter are largely due to the efforts Sonera has centred on high-speed subscriptions of over 2 Mbps, whose demand is increasing rapidly.
According to the market review, a little less than 30 per cent of the broadband subscriptions in Finland already have the data transmission rate of 2 Mbps or higher. “Demand for Sonera’s high-speed subscriptions increased rapidly in the second quarter: over 70 per cent of the new sales were accesses of 2 Mbps or higher. Sonera is a clear market leader in the market of high-speed access,” says Juha-Pekka Weckström, Senior Vice President of TeliaSonera Broadband Services Finland.
High-speed broadband is needed because broadband is quickly becoming a communications centre of the digital home. The subscription is no longer used only to send email and pay bills: the use of different image, video and TV services is increasing rapidly. In Sweden, nearly 200,000 TeliaSonera customers are already watching digital TV channels over broadband. The service will be launched in Finland during the autumn.
The increase in the demand for high-speed access is an indication of rapid changes in the market, for which Sonera has been preparing by building an ultra high speed fibre optic network. Sonera has a fibre optic network in the largest 15 towns in Finland. The coverage area is constantly growing from the current 100,000 households, as investments are being made. Sonera Broadband Extra – the company’s fibre optic access – provides a speed of up to 100 Mbps. “In future, we will provide equally high-speed access for Sonera's cable households, which will double the coverage to 200,000 households,” says Juha-Pekka Weckström.
“Sonera with its over 25,000 consumer customers is the leader in the market of fibre-optic-based consumer subscriptions,” says Batu Karasar, Director of Sales and Marketing. In addition to new sales, more and more old customers are also upgrading their access speeds. “The delivery of fibre optic access has been made as easy as possible from the very beginning. On a self-service channel, customers can order accesses and change data transmission rates or services even within a minute,” says Batu Karasar.
