Sonera provides an automatic meter reading system for over 100,000 power subscribers of Tampereen Sähköverkko Oy
Tampereen Sähköverkko Oy and TeliaSonera Finland have made agreed on a procurement of remote reading system for electricity meters and related reading services. The value of the agreement in the whole contract period is over EUR 20 million. The installation will begin in autumn 2008 and continue until 2010, providing more than 100,000 power consumption sites in Tampereen Sähköverkko’s supply area with remote readable meters. The benefits brought about by the new system include more accurate, customer-specific usage data and more efficient distribution network management.
The contract signed today covers consumption metering services from 2008 to 2025 and includes an option of providing additional meters later on. The criteria emphasized in the selection of the supplier included competence in corresponding deliveries, environmental issues and overall cost-efficiency.
Automatic reading of electricity meters allows developing more specific services for the power company’s customers, such as invoices based on actual power usage or, alternatively, flat-rate billing based on estimated consumption. The remote reading also makes it possible to produce individualized and accurate reports for monitoring the power usage.
The more customer-specific consumption data will allow Tampereen Sähköverkko to develop services that take better account of the customers' individual needs. Further, the remote reading makes it easier to optimize the distribution network, even out the capacity as well as schedule any changes needed in the network. Above all, however, the more cost-effective management of the network benefits the customer. As the electricity meters need not be read on site, travel expenses and the environmental load caused by traffic will be reduced. The change also simplifies and accelerates the conclusion of a power agreement when you move to a new place.
“This is one of the biggest contracts in our history, and it very much reinforces our leading position in the automatic meter reading business,” says Harri Viljanen, Area Sales Manager at TeliaSonera Finland. Before this agreement, Sonera has provided remote readable meters to about 325,000 power consumption sites. Tapio Salonen, Managing Director of Tampereen Sähköverkko Oy, emphasises the role of the lifecycle approach and continuity in their choice of the supplier: “When we were making our decision, Sonera’s competence and ability to carry a delivery to a successful conclusion and to produce and further develop the remote reading services were held in high regard.”
Sonera carries responsibility for purchasing and installation of the electricity meters, implementation of the reading systems, and any telecommunications services needed. The whole system enables reading of electricity meters from a wide range of manufacturers, and makes use of different telecommunications connections in a diversified manner.
