The State buys a centralized network solution from Sonera
The Finnish State Treasury has selected TeliaSonera Finland Oyj to provide central government with a high-quality information network solution that meets tight information security criteria. The new switching core with management and service function for Finnish government network interconnects government offices and public services and also transmits their external traffic. Sonera’s smart network solution generates cost savings to the State and improves information security. The agreement signed today is for ten years
The switching core solution promotes the State’s aim of boosting the use of information networks and developing the central government’s service offering in a centralized manner. Sonera is responsible for both the implementation of the swittching core and the delivery of the associated control and contact centre. Sonera’s solution is considered to provide value for money.
“Sonera’s success is based on expertise and a systematic quality thinking. We consider it a display of trust that the State decided to build services important to its future IT development largely on Sonera’s solution,” says Juha-Pekka Weckström, Senior Vice President of TeliaSonera Broadband Services Finland.
The State saves millions of euros as Sonera simplifies the central government’s data communications architecture. About 100,000 people working in Ministries, government offices and public services at over 3,000 locations will be using the common network. The network will be piloted in October–November and it will be available to the new Regional State Administrative Agencies at the beginning of 2010.
“Central government aims at efficiency improvement through more effective and extensive use of IT. Harmonization of network services improves the level of service while reducing total costs. The network solution’s security and long-term development opportunities played an essential role when we were selecting the service provider,” says Max Hamberg, Ministerial Adviser of the State IT Management Unit.
In future, the switching core will handle the central government’s internal data communications and all connections to the central government’s external service providers and the Internet. The connection core will improve the central government’s information security and efficiency. The common network also provides a flexible basis for the development of citizens’ services.
