TeliaSonera becomes a certified provider of payment data transmission service as the first operator in Europe

TeliaSonera is the first telecommunications operator in Europe that has been granted an international PCI DSS data security certificate. Meeting the requirements of the certificate is obligatory to all those who process, transmit or store payment card data, such as vendors and companies providing data communications services for them. An operator with a certificate saves the service provider’s own data security costs and helps to ensure that the service provider’s payment service system complies with the standard.
PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) is an international data security standard for the payment card industry and it is used by the leading credit card companies in the world. The standard defines requirements for the processing and transmitting of payment card data, covering the entire data system. To obtain a certificate, a service provider has to prove that their entire payment service system is compliant with the standard, including any outsourced data communications solutions.
“The operator’s certificate saves the customer’s auditing costs. Our customers can rely on it that their systems’ compliance with the standard is not impaired by the operator’s ability to meet the requirements set. When TeliaSonera's data communications solution has been found to be compliant with the standard, the customer can say to the auditor of their own system that the data communications part of the system is already PCI audited and approved,” says Arto Urataipale, Director at TeliaSonera.
The standard is managed by an independent, international body, PCI Security Standard Council, which was founded by payment card brands. The certificate according to the standard was granted to TeliaSonera DataNet data transmission service.
The auditing of TeliaSonera’s service was implemented by Nixu Oy.
